Glutathione (GSH) is a low-molecular-weight thiol tripeptide composed of three amino acids - L-glutamate, L-cysteine, and glycine - joined through an unusual gamma-glutamyl peptide bond that gives the molecule the systematic name L-gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine. It is the most abundant endogenous non-protein thiol found across plant and animal tissues, where the free sulfhydryl group of its cysteine residue is the chemically reactive center.
