Melanotan 2 (also known as Melanotan II or MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and a structural analogue of the endogenous neuropeptide alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). First developed through melanocortin research at the University of Arizona, it is constructed as a lactam-cyclized seven-amino-acid sequence, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2, in which the cyclization and D-phenylalanine substitution confer enhanced metabolic stability and receptor potency relative to native alpha-MSH. It belongs to the melanocortin agonist class and is supplied here as a research reference material.

In preclinical and in-vitro studies, Melanotan 2 has been investigated as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors, with reported activity at the MC1, MC3, and MC4 receptor subtypes. Within laboratory and animal models, researchers have examined its role in melanogenesis (pigmentation pathways mediated through MC1 receptor signaling), as well as its influence on appetite and feeding behavior and on sexual-arousal pathways studied through MC4 receptor activity. It has also been used as a pharmacological tool compound to probe melanocortin receptor structure-function relationships.
