Product Description
PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide belonging to the melanocortin receptor ligand class. It is an analog of the alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) family and is the major active metabolite of the earlier research peptide melanotan II, differing from it by a free C-terminal carboxyl group in place of a C-terminal amide. Its seven-amino-acid backbone carries the sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH, in which an intramolecular lactam bridge between aspartic acid and lysine side chains constrains the ring conformation and contributes to its receptor activity profile.
In preclinical research, PT-141 has been characterized as a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist with notable activity at the melanocortin-4 (MC4R) and melanocortin-3 (MC3R) receptors. In vitro receptor-binding work and animal models have been used to investigate its central mechanism of action, including reported activation of hypothalamic neurons measured by increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in rodent and primate studies. Because MC3R and MC4R are widely expressed in central nervous system regions associated with arousal and motivation, this compound is frequently used as a research tool for probing melanocortin signaling pathways. Investigators studying reproductive and neuroendocrine physiology have examined PT-141 in laboratory settings to explore melanocortin-mediated signaling rather than to establish any therapeutic outcome. All effects described here derive from in-vitro and animal research and should not be interpreted as human health claims.
