Selank

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed as a stabilized analog of tuftsin, an endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) derived from the heavy chain of immunoglobulin G. First synthesized at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Selank extends the tuftsin core with an additional Pro-Gly-Pro fragment to yield the seven-amino-acid sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, a modification that confers greater enzymatic stability than the parent peptide. It is supplied as a lyophilized powder for in-vitro and laboratory research applications.

In preclinical research, Selank has been investigated as a regulatory peptide acting on neurochemical and immunomodulatory pathways. Animal and in-vitro studies have examined its interaction with GABAergic signaling, including effects on GABA-A receptor subunit expression that appear independent of the benzodiazepine binding site, as well as its reported influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) messenger RNA levels in hippocampal tissue. Additional preclinical work has explored its modulation of enkephalin metabolism and monoaminergic systems.

In rodent behavioral models such as the elevated plus-maze, researchers have characterized Selank's anxiolytic-like activity, which has been described as comparable in profile to reference compounds while reportedly lacking the sedation and motor impairment observed with benzodiazepines in those same models. These observations are drawn strictly from preclinical and in-vitro studies and have not been established as human health outcomes.
